Much ado about nothing? Legacy tobacco advertising and the role of public health

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.puhe.2017.03.016Get rights and content

Highlights

  • Tobacco-related morbidity and mortality remains a serious public health issue.

  • Efforts to denormalize smoking are undermined by ‘chic’ historical adverts for tobacco products in ‘olde worlde’ pubs.

  • Although challenging such ‘tradition’ runs the risk of inviting routine criticisms of public health, this is no reason to falter in combating such adverts.

  • All tobacco-related advertising should be banned.
