Short Communication
European patient's cross-border mobility directive

Highlights

  • The directive on patients' rights in cross-border health care in Europe has a potential to create a pan-European health care market.

  • Supposition: the growing mobility of EU citizens will be accompanied with the growing cross-border medical service provision.

  • The patient flows between Member States are limited and expected to remain so, as the vast majority of patients in the European Union receive health care in their own country and prefer to do so.

  • The Directive did not stimulate cross-border patients' mobility within the EU.

  • The patients' mobility and cross-border medical care are significant for the future development of the health care systems of the EU Member States.
